Position Summary
The Institute for Nonprofit Practice’s Senior Grant Writer is the primary writer for all donor reports, letters of intent, prospective funding scenarios, and proposals and demonstrates exceptional attention to detail, the ability to multitask, a high level of organization, and excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. The Senior Grant Writer understands the needs of grant-making organizations and presents the mission, values, capabilities, and brand of INP accordingly. They are ultimately responsible for the overall quality, accuracy, and timeliness of all grant proposals and report submissions and responses. INP currently has several institutional donors consisting of both local and national foundations and corporations with most gifts ranging from $100,000 - $2 million+.
Reporting to the Vice President, Development, the Senior Grant Writer is a key member of the development team responsible for proposal writing to obtain funding from grant-making foundations and corporations.
Essential Functions
- Writes a minimum of 40 new and renewing grant proposals each year.
- Researches, prepares, submits, and tracks grant proposals and reports.
- Maintains a sound knowledge of INP’s mission, programs, target population, and strategic vision and uses this information to better prepare proposals and other written communications.
- Serves as end-to-end project manager for all grant proposals and reports, driving each submission from initiation through final delivery.
- Leads cross-functional coordination with program, finance, and leadership teams to source the data, impact narratives, and supporting documentation required for proposals and funder reports.
- Develops and embodies the voice of INP ensuring that all proposals and donor reports reflect the values and culture of the organization.
- Conducts research on foundations and other grant-making entities for potential funding opportunities.
- Prepares and submits proposals and reports in accordance with each foundation's guidelines.
- Conducts follow-up communications with funders to provide additional materials as required or necessary.
- Tracks and makes visible INP’s commitment to funders.
- Works closely with the Vice President, Development, and other colleagues including members of the program team, to develop transformational, principal gift-level cases for support.
- Assists fundraising colleagues with creating and finalizing individual principal and major gift proposals.
Additional Responsibilities
- Maintains a high level of attention to detail as it relates to managing philanthropic grants and proposals.
- Maintains grant calendar along with common grant attachments.
- Supervises and/or engages with contracted grant writers as needed.
- Manages deadlines and timelines, as well as the collection of supporting materials and documentation, and accomplishes projects and tasks in the prescribed time frame.
- Shares information with colleagues, including written solicitation strategies, and keeps colleagues informed as needed concerning program strategies and progress.
- Assists with program and donor stewardship, planning and coordination of site visits, and the production and delivery of progress reports.
Skills & Experience

- An authentic passion for INP’s mission and desire to foster practices incorporating diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging is a must.
- Demonstrated experience writing successful fundraising proposals required, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- 7+ years of significant experience working in development or advancement.
- Knowledge of corporate and foundation fundraising.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate, working independently and as part of a team to reach fundraising goals.
- Must be a self-starter with the ability to “hit the ground running.”

Compensation & Benefits
INP oers a competitive salary for all sta positions. The exact salary that will be oered to the Senior Grant Writer will be determined based on a consideration of the successful candidate’s skills, experience, and geography and aligned with INP’s compensation policies.
Salary Range: $80,000 – $90,000 annually
