AmeriCorps Fair Housing Volunteer – Position Summary
The AmeriCorps Fair Housing Volunteer supports the mission of the Kentucky Fair Housing Council (KFHC) by assisting individuals seeking fair housing services, supporting case management and investigations, conducting community outreach, and promoting fair housing education throughout the community. This position provides valuable hands-on experience in civil rights advocacy, housing justice, client services, and nonprofit operations.
The volunteer will serve as a first point of contact for individuals seeking fair housing assistance by screening incoming calls and office visitors, conducting initial client interviews, gathering relevant documentation, and maintaining accurate records in the organization's case management system. Under staff supervision, the volunteer will assist in reviewing fair housing complaints and investigations by researching relevant state and federal fair housing laws and regulations.
The volunteer will participate in weekly client services meetings, contribute perspectives on active cases, and support grant reporting requirements through timely data entry and case updates. Maintaining strict client confidentiality and professionalism is essential.
In addition, the volunteer will assist KFHC staff with fair housing compliance trainings for housing providers, service agencies, and community organizations, while participating in ongoing professional development opportunities to strengthen their understanding of fair housing laws and emerging issues.
The volunteer will also represent KFHC at community events, resource fairs, and outreach activities, helping to build relationships with local, state, federal, and nonprofit partners engaged in housing work.
As a member of a small nonprofit team, the volunteer should be adaptable and willing to assist with occasional administrative and operational tasks that support organizational effectiveness. These responsibilities may include distributing outreach materials, assisting with office organization, or helping with other light duties as needed. A collaborative spirit, flexibility, and willingness to contribute wherever needed are important qualities for success in this role.
Key Responsibilities
Screen and respond to incoming client calls, emails, and office visits.
Conduct intake interviews and collect documentation relevant to fair housing complaints.
Assist with fair housing investigations and case review activities.
Maintain accurate client records and case updates in the case management database.
Support grant reporting and data collection requirements.
Participate in weekly client services meetings and case discussions.
Protect client confidentiality and sensitive information.
Assist with fair housing compliance trainings and educational presentations.
Attend professional development and fair housing training opportunities.
Represent KFHC at community outreach events and partner meetings.
Develop and maintain relationships with housing, government, and nonprofit partners.
Assist with general office and administrative support tasks as needed.
Contribute to a collaborative team environment and support organizational operations.
Compensation
AmeriCorps Living Stipend: $20,400 for the service term.
Additional AmeriCorps benefits may be available in accordance with program guidelines and eligibility requirements.
Anyone interested in this position is required to qualify through the AmeriCorps program.
Requirements
- Own transportation
- Live in Lexington or willing to commute to the Lexington office
- Ability to sit at a desk (accommodations can be made if requested)
- Preference for familiarity with office software
