The Sharing Community
Company Overview
The Sharing Community, Inc. is a dynamic, multi-service, community based organization. Currently we operate over 19 programs that offer the widest possible continuum of care to the homeless, hungry, and ill residents of southwest Yonkers – from emergency shelter and food programs to street outreach, HIV/AIDS supportive services, substance abuse counseling, job training, health care and mental health treatment as well as transitional and permanent housing.
Company History
Twenty years ago, Fr. John Duffell of St. Peters Roman Catholic Church, Fr. S. Burtner Ulrich of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Getty Square and Karl Bertrand, a social work intern, realized that nobody was caring for the growing ranks of the homeless who were sleeping in hallways and in parks and were scavenging for food from wherever they could. Recognizing that “it’ll only happen when someone does it”, they opened their churches to feed and shelter the homeless. This was the start of The Sharing Community, Inc, and from that day until today, The Sharing Community has provided for the needs of our sisters and brothers. Day in and day out, one meal, one bed, one conversation, one referral, one phone call at a time, 365 days a year, they have made a real difference in the lives of the people they serve.
Since 1983, The Sharing Community has served over 2,100,000 meals at their soup kitchen; sheltered, housed and/or found housing or work for over 12,000 people who were homeless; developed and constructed over 130 new units of permanent and transitional housing; assisted in job training, medical care, mental health and substance abuse treatment, or HIV/AIDS services for literally tens of thousands more….and been there as a friend, counselor advocate and supporter for those in need, their guiding principle being –“turn no one away”.
