Company Overview
The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health was established by the United States Congress to support the mission of the National Institutes of Health (NIH): improving health through scientific discovery. Guided by a board of directors composed of distinguished leaders in biomedical research, philanthropy, and business, the Foundation for NIH works to advance research by linking the generosity of private sector donors and partners to NIH programs.
The premier medical research organization in the world, NIH is the steward of our nation’s investment in medical discovery. Directing most of the federal government's investment in medical research, NIH is composed of 27 Institutes and Centers, each with its own broadly defined mission.
The Foundation for NIH supports medical research at NIH in ways that are as pioneering and cutting edge as the research itself. Public-private partnerships are essential to accelerating scientific discovery for human health. A seedbed of innovations in bold public-private initiatives, the foundation is where the passion, imagination, generosity and insight of our partners, donors and a dedicated professional staff converge in a very special way.
Company History
Established in 1990 by Congress and incorporated as a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit public charity in 1996.
Notable Accomplishments / Recognition
The foundation facilitates public-private partnerships of all sizes and configurations. They range from very large-scale programs, such as the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, the Osteoarthritis Initiative, the Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and The Edmond J. Safra Family Lodge, to much smaller ones, such as special fellowships, research awards, lectures, and conferences.
