Avesta is Maine's largest and most sophisticated non-profit housing organization. We've earned our reputation for excellence by handling each case and project with compassion, conscientiousness and the highest level of expertise. Our services today encompass a broad rant of capabilities; Development, Property Management, Rental Assistance and Residential Care.
One of Avesta's most vital roles is that of a tireless advocate for afforable housing at both the state and national levels. We work on several fronts simultaneously: lobbying for the passage of strong legislation, pushing policy makers to make positive decisions about affordable housing, and securing resources for more housing opportunities. Locally, we strive to educate municipalities and their residents about the benefits of our programs, so they will welcome affordable housing into their communities.
Company History
Avesta Housing (formerly known as York Cumberland Housing) was founded in 1972. Over three decades it has grown into the largest non-profit housing agency in Maine. A non-profit organization, Avesta has developed over 1,700 units of affordable housing for itself and other entities. It currently owns over 1000 units in over 44 properties. The agency manages about 1300 units of housing including its own properties and properties owned by others. Avesta is led by a Board of Directors consisting of 14 members whose membership is drawn from a variety of banking, business, public, community, social service, and housing organizations. Avesta maintains administrative headquarters in Portland, Maine . It has a staff of about 80 full-time and part-time employees.
