The Indigenous Journalists Association (IJA), in partnership with The Oklahoman and the Kirkpatrick Foundation, is excited to open applications for the 2026 IJA–Oklahoman Native American Journalism Summer Internships – a paid newsroom experience for Indigenous students passionate about journalism and storytelling.
This full-time, summer internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on reporting experience in a professional newsroom, build journalism skills and connect with experienced reporters, editors and media professionals.
About the Program
Three Indigenous students will be selected for this 10-week paid internship in Oklahoma City, where they will: Report on breaking news, features and trending topics across communities in Oklahoma.
Work alongside reporters, photographers, videographers, editors and audience teams.
Learn newsroom skills in writing, reporting, fact-checking and digital/social journalism.
Receive mentorship, professional coaching and real journalistic responsibilities.
Attend the IJA Annual Conference with travel and conference costs included.
Receive a one-year IJA student membership.
Journalism students with multimedia skills – including video production and social storytelling – are especially encouraged to apply.
Requirements
Eligibility
Must be a current college student eligible for IJA membership. Journalism majors are preferred, but applicants from related fields are welcome. Previous journalism experience – such as internships, student media or freelance work – is a plus. Strong writing, reporting and fact-checking skills are required. Language skills beyond English are encouraged. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
