The United States Naval Academy Alumni Association and the United States Naval Academy Foundation are two independent, not-for-profit corporations sharing a single President and CEO, and operating as a fully integrated organization in support of the Naval Academy and its mission. The Executive Director of Finance is critical to the success of the Enterprise and reports directly to the Executive Vice President/Chief Financial Officer (EVP/CFO), serving both organizations. The consolidated balance sheet contains assets of over $620M, and the average annual revenue of the Enterprise is over $100M. The successful candidate shall be technically competent, collaborative, and an excellent communicator and will assist the EVP/CFO with oversight of all financial and accounting functions, work closely with the United States Naval Academy (USNA) Comptroller and Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) CFO, and will also interface with both Boards, as well as the Joint Finance and Audit Committee, and Joint Investment Committee, of the Boards. This role also works closely with internal staff across all departments to create efficiencies and leverage opportunities throughout the Enterprise.
This exempt position has an annual range of $95,100 through $135,800.
This position pays a competitive salary commensurate with experience and is also eligible for an annual performance-based bonus of up to 6%, when applicable. You would also be eligible for a generous benefits plan which includes medical, dental, vision, an FSA, an HSA, a fully vested 403(b) retirement plans with employer matching, 22 days of accrued paid time off (PTO) per fiscal year, 14 paid holidays per calendar year, group life insurance, short-term & long-term disability, identity theft protection, and annual opportunities for professional development. Although not guaranteed, certain additional benefits may be offered through the Naval Academy, such as use of certain recreational facilities (including the Brigade Sports Complex gym, marina and indoor/outdoor pools).
This position is based in historic Annapolis at our current offices located overlooking the Severn River on the beautiful grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy. In 2023, the staff of the Alumni Association and Foundation moved into new modern offices in the Alumni Center, which are on the banks of College Creek overlooking the Naval Academy and downtown Annapolis.

Qualifications
- B.S. in Accounting or Finance
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred
- At least 7 years’ accounting experience
- Expertise in non-profit accounting
- In-depth knowledge of finance and budgeting concepts
- Relevant experience with non-profit tax reporting
- Familiarity with payroll processing and relevant rules and regulations
- Experience accounting for planned gifts and other philanthropic giving vehicles
- Familiarity with current accounting software systems with experience in Blackbaud products (Financial Edge NXT and CRM) is highly desirable
- Experience in a Foundation or Higher Education environment preferred
- Strong supervisory, problem solving, research, and communication skills are necessary
- Strong interpersonal skills in managing people and working as part of a team is necessary

Responsibilities
- Responsibility for maintaining the company’s system of accounts, books and records on all company transactions and assets.
- Responsibility for the preparation and review and analysis of internal monthly financial statements.
- Manages the external audit and tax preparation and compliance.
- Responsible for the coordination and assists in preparation of the annual budget and budget execution.
- Presents financial data to outside committee/boards.
- Guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring and enforcing policies and procedures.
- Monitors the flow of cash receipts and disbursements to meet the needs of the Enterprise to include managing daily cash needs.
- Oversee programs to minimize risks and losses that might arise from financial transactions and business operations undertaken by the organization.
- Manages the renewal process for the liability insurance coverages for the Enterprise, and ensures the organizations has appropriate coverage.
- Works closely with the EVP/CFO on the organizations’ Enterprise Risk Management framework.
- Coordinates the processing of gift funds to USNA and NAAA.
- Responsibility for evaluating the performance of the 13 members of the Finance Department.
- Recommends training requirements and has the duty to keep the staff at the highest level of skill necessary to meet the needs and objectives of the organizations.
- Responsible for internal controls and risk assessment.
- Responsible for evaluating and improving department processes.
- Oversees and manage special projects, including projects to implement new systems.
- Responsible for remaining current in financial regulations. Accounting standards and best practices.
