Position Summary
The Director of Retail provides strategic leadership and oversight for all aspects of The Dalí Museum Store, including merchandising, product development, financial performance, and daily operations. This role is responsible for developing and executing a retail strategy that enhances the visitor experience, reflects the Museum’s mission and brand, and drives earned revenue growth.
Reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer, the Director leads a high-performing retail operation and oversees a team including the Store Manager, Warehouse Operations Manager, and Inventory Control Manager. As a key contributor to the Museum’s financial sustainability, this role is responsible for building and evolving a distinctive, mission-aligned retail program that supports both revenue generation and meaningful visitor engagement.
Responsibilities
Strategy
- Define and execute a comprehensive retail strategy aligned with the Museum's mission, brand and exhibition calendar
- Establish annual retail revenue goals, KPIs and operating budgets; monitor and report on progress regularly
- Analyze retail sales performance, margins and market trends to inform strategic decisions and long-range planning
- Identify and pursue opportunities to grow earned revenue through retail innovation, new product categories and emerging channels
- Serve as a strategic partner to senior leadership on financial planning and institutional priorities
Merchandising
- Lead the development of a distinctive, brand-driven merchandising strategy that enhances the visitor experience across all touchpoints
- Oversee product assortment curation across onsite and online channels, ensuring alignment with audience insights and institutional identity
- Cultivate and manage key vendor and licensing relationships, including contract negotiation, performance management and collaboration with the Dalí Foundation
- Oversee retail-related agreements, including e-commerce platform and wholesale contracts
- Develop proprietary, collection-inspired merchandise, including publications, exclusives, branded and licensed products
- Develop and refine pricing strategies to support margin goals and overall profitability
- Set/manage inventory strategy to balance consumer demand, cash flow and operational efficiency
- Champion a cohesive, high-quality in-store and online experience through strong visual merchandising and brand storytelling
- Ensure effective systems/processes for purchasing, inventory control, product flow
- Maintain compliance with audit standards, including oversight of physical inventory processes
- Partner with Marketing and Visitor Experience to integrate retail initiatives into broader audience engagement strategies
- Develop promotions, retail events and member offerings that drive traffic, deepen engagement and increase sales
Leadership
- Build, lead and develop a high-performing retail team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration and inclusion
- Establish clear performance expectations, conduct regular reviews and support professional growth across the team
- Oversee day-to-day retail operations, ensuring consistent, high-quality and efficient store experience
- Maintain a regular presence on the sales floor to support operations, coach staff and stay connected to the visitor experience
- Provide hands-on operational support during peak periods, including weekends, holidays and special events
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Retail Management, Arts Administration, Marketing, or a related field required
- 5–7 years of progressive retail leadership experience, with a demonstrated track record of managing teams and driving revenue growth
- Experience in a museum, cultural institution, or mission-driven nonprofit strongly preferred
- Proven experience managing a retail operation with P&L responsibility, ideally at $1M+ in annual revenue
Skills & Competencies
- Strong business acumen with the ability to translate data and financial metrics into actionable strategy
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute merchandising strategies that balance brand integrity with performance
- Experience with inventory management and retail POS systems
- Excellent vendor management and negotiation skills
- Strong visual merchandising sensibility with an appreciation for art, design and institutional storytelling
- Exceptional leadership and team development skills
Working Conditions
- This is a full-time, exempt position based on-site at The Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, FL
- Regular weekend, holiday, and evening availability required during peak periods and special events
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform occasional lifting in a retail/warehouse environment
